Genesis 1, Take Four
The 31 verses of chapter 1 provide a description of the six days of creation. As part of my study and exploration of the chapter, I thought it would be helpful to see it outlined:
Day 1 – God created the heavens and the earth – formless, void, covered with water in darkness. The Spirit is moving over the surface and God speaks light into existence. God called the light day and the darkness night.
Day 2 – God created an expanse in the midst of the waters and separated the waters from waters. This seems to be the oceans separated from the waters and moisture in the air, clouds and atmosphere. God called the expanse the heavens. This is the stellar heavens or what we call the universe.
Day 3 – Water covered the earth so God called forth dry land to appear. The dry land He called earth and the waters, sea. God then called forth vegetation, plants yielding seeds and fruit trees bearing fruit of their own kind.
Day 4 – God created lights in the heavens to separate day from night and as signs for seasons and days and years. These lights in the heavens provided light upon the earth. God made a greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars and placed them in the heavens.
Day 5 – God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth.” This included great sea monsters and every winged bird after its kind. Animals in the sea and in the air.
Day 6 – God created land animals: cattle, creeping things and beasts of the earth. Also, God said, “Let Us (the Father, Son & Spirit) make man in Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish, the birds, the cattle and every creeping thing on the earth.” God created male and female, He blessed them and said, “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and rule over the fish, the birds and every living creature on the earth.” He gave everything to the man and woman for their life, sustenance and to subdue it.
Let’s discover together
This is helpful to me to see it outlined in this simple format. But I can’t leave chapter one just yet. There are still some questions I want to ponder and recurring phrases throughout the chapter that should be considered. (Note to readers: I don’t have this all planned out. I have cursory knowledge of the text, but I am discovering these principles and truths in real time.)
Image bearer
Lord, how should I live today in light of Genesis one? Help me bear the image of You today. May my thoughts and actions reflect those of a man of God. May I subdue the world as You intended and not allow it to subdue me. This is only accomplished through Your Spirit and through Your grace. Help me Lord, Amen!
