God Spoke
Genesis 1, Take Five
There are recurring themes to each day of creation. Every day began with God speaking. “Then God said” is repeated each day and some days a couple of times. Psalms 33:6 says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made and by the breath of His mouth all their host…for He spoke, and it was done.” Effortlessly, God spoke and created the heavens and the earth out of nothing. If we take a peek forward into Genesis 2:7 where the author gives more detail into the creation of man, we see the power of the breath of God as well. “God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” With the power of His Word, God spoke creation into existence and “breathed” life into man.
It is good
The other recurring phrase is “God saw that it is good.” Every day God declared His creation as GOOD and on the final day, “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was VERY GOOD.” During the sixth day, He was not satisfied that all was good until the woman was created. God said, “it is not good for man to be alone.” God speaks, and His breath creates good and complete things. I consider both of these as very simple and straightforward. God speaks, and His breath is a creative force. And what He creates is good and complete.
Bring me my Bible
This brings to mind 2 Timothy 3:16,17. Paul writes about the breath of God producing what is good. “All scripture is breathed/inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” We are going to see that the fall of man in Genesis 3 and the entrance of sin into the world will disrupt the state of “good” in God’s creation. All of man will be corrupt. This corrupt state of the world will continue until the events of the final chapters of Revelation take place. But during this “in between time”, God has breathed into existence His scriptures which are complete and perfect in their origins and powerful to produce “good” works.
Cool correlation
In Genesis 1 and 2 Timothy 3 we see the creative breath of God producing what is good. This is a pretty cool correlation! However, the creation of scripture didn’t happen in one day but instead took place over 1500 years, using men from different walks of life and in various situations to produce a comprehensive and complete work of God. Also, He didn’t create scripture out of nothing but used flawed men to write various books of history, poetry, prophecies and letters to formulate a complete record of God’s revelation. Psalms 19:7 says the law of the Lord is perfect. Lord, thank you for scripture. You created it in a miraculous way and it breathes life into me and equips me to do good things. Also, there is a yearning in my heart to someday live in your kingdom where all things are good once again. Lord, come quickly!
