I Am All You Need
John 6:22-65
“Jesus answered them and said, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal. Therefore, they said to Him, what shall we do so that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, this is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent,” verses 26-29.
Jesus slipped away from the crowds. The people pursued Jesus by boats to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. They had miraculously been fed and they wanted more. They wanted a king that would meet their needs. They wanted a king that would over-through the Romans. They thought they found such a leader in Jesus. But Jesus rebuked them for being consumed with their physical and earthly needs and missing His main message of eternal significance: you must believe.
This is an issue of the heart; of faith, of believing and receiving Jesus. But they didn’t comprehend it as such. Instead of believing and receiving, they asked the following question; What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”
At face value, this seems noble. But be careful. It’s a disguise of religiosity, not humble belief and faith. Like so many religions today, they wanted a formula to repeat a prayer, perform a ceremony, take part in a ritual, etc. In order to experience God.
It’s not about works and rituals. It’s not about “doing”; it’s about first believing and embracing Jesus with simple, pure faith. It’s an issue of the heart.
Jesus replies by saying, “this is the work of God (not your works but the work of God) that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” Life transformation is receiving the work of God by faith, not by working your way to eternal life.
The people then said, show us a bigger miracle and then we’ll believe. Jesus replied and said, you want me to give the whole nation food the way the people received manna from heaven??? Instead He said, “I am the bread of life” …I am all you need.
Lord, forgive me for being consumed with the here and now. I also am guilty of living in my present reality, consumed with my “earthly food” of comfort and ease. Yes, You have given us all things to enjoy and You have blessed us. We are grateful. Nevertheless, may I seek You and the things that are eternal above all else.
Jesus said, “It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing; the words I have spoken to you are Spirit and are Life” Amen!
