The Hospital
This is a post from a dear friend of ours who was in the hospital caring for her 92 year old father. This is truly Living Scripture Daily! Here’s Dorothy…
I’ve been at the hospital for the last two weeks taking care of my dad. He’s been in ICU most of the time where the critical care patients are. It’s been a hard yet humbling time for me. Not only because I’m worried about dad’s health but I’ve seen the distraught and worn out faces of the patients and their families.
I decided that I wanted to look for the good in all of this and I tell you I have found it. I have watched the nurses do things that most of us could never be able to take and my appreciation for them came out in spades. Most of them, no matter what they were dealing with, would smile and keep doing what they had to do despite the circumstances.
I decided that I would make an effort to talk to the patients and most often pray with them. I prayed with a woman who had a double lung transplant as well as a very well known philanthropist in Houston who also had a double lung transplant. He is Jewish and was so happy when I prayed over him. The crocodile tears just poured down his cheeks. Wow, what a God moment!
Then there was the woman who was waiting while her dad had a biopsy for lesions on the brain. I stopped in the hall, held her hand and we prayed. We both knew that our dads were very sick and in that moment , our hearts came together in petitions for our dads healing.
Then there was the man next to my dad who was a coach and a teacher who at one time had been a big burly man but now looked like a cadaver. He has so many problems but I touched his head and took his bony hand and prayed. His eyes lit up and he nodded the best he could and once again, God was there.
Then there was a Muslim man a few doors down from dad and I noticed he never had any family visiting and that made me sad for him. So, I went in and started talking to him and asked If I could pray for him in Jesus name but he said no and that the imam had already prayed for him. I worried all that night that I had offended him so the next day I walked by and smiled and put my hand over my heart. He smiled and motioned for me to come in and we chatted and I told him I was still praying for him. It was another special moment where I think God took lemons and made them into lemonade!
In the midst of life’s most difficult times, we can be a light in the darkness. Despite all my weariness and concern, I felt warm and at peace and grateful that I could share God’s love. I’m not telling you this to get pats on the back. I’m telling you because that in the midst of your fears and your pain, reaching out to help others is the best elixir in the world. God’s elixir of love️. Goodnight all . Tomorrow is a new day and let’s be the best people we can be! God bless, Dorothy
