The Schemes of Satan
Enjoying an Astros game with Leigh, Brooke and friend, Sophie.
Genesis 3
Sin has entered the world and the honeymoon is over. Eve was deceived and then sinned. She was by herself, vulnerable and unprepared to resist the schemes of Satan. She simply wasn’t battle-ready. Conversely, we should be prepared. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 2:11 that he consciously and purposefully forgave an offender “so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.” Paul knew that harboring resentment in himself would embolden Satan. But Paul, along with those of us who understand God’s Word, knows how Satan works. We are much, much, much more equipped than Eve was. Eve was deceived. Nevertheless, it was sin. And she did what we often do when we sin, she looked for validation or security in others for what she had done. Eve immediately went to Adam. The text simply says, “and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.” At that moment their eyes were opened, and they realized their nakedness (and their sin).
What did Adam say?
I wonder what their conversation was when Eve took the fruit to Adam. Did Adam say, “The serpent said WHAT? You did WHAT? You want me to do WHAT? Or was there was a conversation at all? Often Leigh and I know what each other are thinking without speaking to each other. Perhaps she just handed it to him and he looked at her knowing what had happened and said to himself, ‘this is my wife and we’ll go down together.’ I’m not sure if Adam resisted at all? In any case, Eve was deceived but Adam knew what he was doing, and he did it anyway.
Awareness
Once Adam ate, knowledge of sin entered them both, flooded their consciousness and their first thought was, ‘I’m naked and ashamed.’ I must admit, I’m not totally sure why this was their first thought. Why does the text define awareness of nakedness as the immediate and defining thought related to their sin? Another question I have is why Eve’s eyes weren’t opened immediately after she ate the fruit. It didn’t happen until Adam ate and together their eyes were opened. If any of you have insight into this, shoot me an email.
Don’t hide!
We can also relate to what they did next; they hid from God. Futile yes, but a common tactic for us. We’ll look at this more next time. Lord, we suffer from living in a sinful world and carrying around this fleshly body that is susceptible and weak toward sin. Nevertheless, we are grateful You have given us Your Spirit and armed us with weapons to win the battle. Like Paul said, you have given us “the word of truth, in the power of God, by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left,” 2 Cor. 6:7. Give us strength and diligence to face our battles, one day at a time, and by Your grace see victory. Amen!
