Genesis 9 - 11

Since I’ve committed to daily time with God, I find that sometimes I go through dry spells. I’ve been reading these chapters this week without much to say about them. Consequently, not much to reflect on and apply to my life. It’s probably a combination of scriptures without devotional meat plus, just mentally, I’m a little spiritually flat. Read more

Blessings

Genesis 9

This is an interesting chapter. Several issues are brought forth in the text that set up God’s plan for life on a post-flood earth. Interestingly, the issues set forth are not politically correct according to current left-leaning views. However, the more important theme of this section is the blessings of God. What does it mean to be blessed of God?Read more

Life Together

It's high school graduation time. This one is from May. 1977.

Genesis 8

It rained for 40 days and 40 nights but the “water prevailed upon the earth for one hundred and fifty days,” 7:24. Prevailed seems to mean that the water reached its height above the highest mountains. No creature that breathed through its nostrils survived unless they were on the ark. It took another couple months for the water to recede below the mountaintops, (8:4,5). It was 378 days before the land was dry and God told Noah that he and the occupants could leave the ark. That’s a long time.Read more

The Flood

What does this pic teach you? Trust? Innovate? Creativity? Some things you just can't do alone?

Genesis 7

This is the flood chapter. The primary devotional thought that emerged for me was the joy of obedience. Chapter 6 ended with the statement, “Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.” Then a few verses later in 7:5, “Noah did according to all that the Lord had commanded him.”  Three times; Noah did, Noah did, Noah did. In the most difficult situation I can imagine, Noah obeyed God. Read more

Bad to Worse

Here's another throw back pic from 6 years ago.

Genesis 6

Cain spawned an evil linage that lived without regard to God. At this time men lived 800 to 900 years and couples would produce dozens and dozens of children. The population increased significantly and quickly. The genealogies of chapter 5 indicate that the world was around 1500 years old when the flood came. It is estimated that there could’ve been over a billion people on the earth. Read more

The Big Picture

I attended the first game of the Rockets, Warriors Western Finals playoff. It wasn't a good game for the Rockets!

Genesis 5

From a devotional standpoint, Genesis 5 is tough chapter. Sometimes if I muscle through it and just keep writing, insights emerge. So, since I don’t like to back down from a challenge, here we go.Read more

Its Simple

This pic takes us back about 6 years.

Genesis 4

God did not accept Cain AND his offering. The form of the offering was wrong because the heart of Cain was wrong. There are indications of Cain’s heart issues throughout chapter 4. First, preparing an unacceptable offering indicates defiance of God’s instructions and a sense of “I’ll do it my way.” Additionally, his immediate response toward God for rejecting his offering was anger, not remorse or contrition. Lastly, Cain’s angry heart turned into hatred and hatred into murder.  The unrighteous despise the righteous.Read more

Cain

 Genesis 4

This is a deeply sad chapter. It’s the story of Cain. Yes, the sin of Adam and Eve was a sad story but theirs was also a story of redemption. We see the picture of redemption in Adam and Eve in 3:21, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and His wife and clothed them.” The first shedding of blood was not Adam and Eve but that of a sacrificial animal to cover their nakedness. A foreshadow into God’s sacrifice of Jesus to cover our nakedness, our sin. Read more

Man and Woman

Speaking of pain in childbirth....here's Beri with Ryker!

Genesis 3

Last time we considered the post-fall curse of the serpent and Satan. From the ashes of despair, God immediately introduces hope. Satan will do some damage but ultimately the seed of the woman, the virgin-born Messiah Jesus, will crush him.Read more
