Final observations about Habakkuk
This book was important to the apostle Paul. He quoted Habakkuk often when preaching the gospel in the synagogues and in his letters to the converted Jews in Galatians. The author of Hebrews uses Habakkuk as well. That means the book of Habakkuk is an important scripture in the development of the gospel message. How many gospel preachers include Habakkuk in their preaching? Paul did but not many today. There’s something we could learn from Paul.
We are mightily saved
Habakkuk is a story about God’s chosen people breaking their promises and covenant responsibilities to their God. God’s lone and faithful prophet, Habakkuk pleads to God to turn them around and bring revival. God replies and says He will turn them around but not in the manner that Habakkuk was expecting. He will bring cursing and judgement. This is critical to the gospel message. Universal love and salvation is a nice sentiment but it’s not a biblical truth. The amazing power of “by grace through faith” is best realized against the backdrop of the reality and severity of God’s judgement against rebellious and unrepentant sinners. We have been mightily saved.
Habakkuk spoke with God, but we have something he didn’t have: the full Bible
It seems Habakkuk learned something new about God. Deep interaction with God will do that. As a prophet, Habakkuk had a direct dialogue (or should I say debate) with God. We are fortunate in that we have the full scope of inspired scripture to read and study. Just like Habakkuk the prophet, we also can learn or expand our understanding of God as we search and study the whole counsel of God. As we learn more about God, may we respond as the prophet did in the last verse of Habakkuk. In spite of the judgement of God, Habakkuk said, “Yet will I exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds feet, and makes me walk on my high places.” Amen!
