Lukewarm

This is the Hogan bridge on the 12th hole at Augusta National. I’m the tall guy (I love saying that) on the left.

Revelation 3:14-22

I got nothing good to say

This is the last of the seven letters. The letter to Laodicea. This is the saddest of the seven churches. There are no commendations. Nothing good to say. It’s possible to conclude that there were no true believers in this church. They were like the Jewish Pharisees that Jesus confronted while on earth. They think they are rich, wealthy and in need of nothing. Instead, Jesus condemns them saying “you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” This is the worst state one can be in. At least a terrible sinner who rejects religion knows he’s lost and without God.  At least they are honest with themselves. On the other hand, the Laodiceans think all is good when all is bad. Really bad. They are delusional.  This is the worst spiritual state one can be in. To be religious without really knowing God at all. Very sad.

Open the door!!!

They are lukewarm, and Jesus is disgusted by them. He’d rather they be hot or cold. So, what should Jesus say to shake them out of their complacency? Like the Pharisees, Jesus holds nothing back; religious pride and arrogance within those who claim to be God’s people is reprehensible. If there are any among them that are willing or able to come to their senses, Jesus says “I’m knocking, open the door and repent”. Father, examine my heart and reveal to me any pride or arrogance I might have. May I humble myself before you, Mighty God and trust that You will exalt me at the proper time.
