Psalms 46, part two

Psalms 46, part two

Be still and know that I am God

In my writings, you see attention given to the purpose and background of the Bible book holistically (the larger context) and the surrounding verses of a particular passage being studied (the immediate context). Once we understand what the passage says in context and what it means, we can be surer of how we should respond, apply and live accordingly. This is the true joy of systematic, devotional Bible Study.

What is the context of this familiar verse in Psalms 46:10? “Be still and know that I am God.” Yesterday, we considered the horror of natural disasters and the havoc they wreak on the lives of people. “Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change. Be still and know that I am God.” Read more

Psalms 46, part one

Be still and know that I am God

What is the context of this familiar verse in Psalms 46:10? “Be still and know that I am God.” The context always helps us reflect on the meaning of the verse in alignment with God’s original intent. What this verse says is straightforward, which is good. But is there more that we can discover from the context?Read more

Rebellion and Deliverance

I'll return to my daily posts on July 23, 2018! But for today, I hope this previous post of Psalm 106 of forgiveness and deliverance encourages you.

Psalms 106:1-48

This is an amazing Psalm of repentance that exalts the lovingkindness of God to forgive and save. I'm fortunate that I tend to live in a consciousness of grace. It's a good place to be. I didn't grow up in a religion of guilt and legalism requiring penance (voluntary self-punishment inflicted as an outward expression of repentance for having done wrong). So, I always lean toward grace and enjoy the comfort that I'm always forgiven. Perhaps even taking it for granted.Read more

Psalms 95

Psalms 95

There is a clear calling to us to worship. Worship involves action on our part. It involves movement, emotion and effort. Some of our churches over-emphasis the somber aspects of worship while looking down on emotional actions of worship. Other Churches over-emphasis the overt aspects of bodily movement in worship. Psalms 95 calls us to both. Read more

Psalms 146

This is a pic from last week of my balcony at my apartment in Houston. In the fifteen years we have lived in Houston, it snowed lightly once. Until this winter! It has snowed twice and last week remained in the 20"s for a couple of days. Global cooling is happening in Houston!

We have a few more posts from Revelation coming. But for this morning, let's look to the Psalms!Read more

Psalms 144

If your grandson says, "let's go wash your car, Pop", then you go wash the car...even if it's a chilly day.

Psalms 144

God is everything to us but the emphasis here is God is our Strength. He is strong and Almighty, and we are so blessed because He is strong on our behalf. He directs His strength toward us, for us and on our behalf for our good.

We need His strength. There are many forces (spiritual and natural) allied against us. Verse 2 is especially descriptive: “His strength is girded by LOVINGKINDESS.” His strength directed toward us is for Read more

Psalms 143

This golf hole is called "the most beautiful golf hole in Texas." It's the par 3, #16 at Cordillera Ranch, Boerne, TX.  It's a few miles from where we built our house in the Texas hill country.

Psalms 143

Bringing accountability into my life to have daily time with God has been so good for me. However, I could say sometimes I love it and other times, well, I don’t. Read more

Psalms 141

This is a picture of my Pacific Christian College basketball team, 1979, in between classes. I'm on the far left. I like to tell people that I played College basketball. They look at my 5'8" frame and look surprised. But just between me and you.....it was a very small college.

Psalms 139, part two

In this Pic I'm with two dear friends whom I work with, Scott and Jalyn, while on an exploratory business trip to Ireland several years ago. In this picture we were in Tullamore where the city officials were proud to give us a tour of the Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey distillery. Unfortunately, the business opportunity did not work out and I haven't been back. A beautiful country!Read more
